Porcelain<\/strong> and the remaining table ceramic products<\/strong> are very similar materials, even tending to be confused.<\/p>\n

By being a product that accompanies us from day to day, porcelain is part of our lives. However, the differences between this and the stoneware<\/strong> or earthenware<\/strong> are not generally known.<\/p>\n

It is therefore pertinent to provide some clarifications<\/strong> that may help you when purchasing a table collection<\/strong><\/a>. To be properly informed, look at the four characteristics and differences<\/strong> that we highlight below.<\/p>\n

Porcelain vs. earthenware or stoneware: What sets them apart?<\/h2>\n

Production process<\/strong><\/h5>\n

The main characteristic differentiating porcelain<\/strong><\/a> from other ceramic products is translucency<\/strong>. Only the porcelain is translucent, peculiarity that comes from the fact that it is the only vitrified and cooked at temperatures of 1400\u00baC, in a reducing environment. This also gives the brightness<\/strong> and whiteness<\/strong> that only this material can have.<\/p>\n

Ceramic products\u2019 composition<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Stoneware<\/strong>, besides feldspar, contains silica and clay within it. In some production processes, other elements may also be added. Earthenware<\/strong>, on the other hand, uses more clays than kaolin.<\/p>\n

Porcelain<\/strong><\/a> is composed of feldspar, kaolin, silica and clay. Raw materials<\/strong> used are common to other ceramic products. However, they go through much more demanding qualitative selection criteria, regarding the constancy of technical characteristics, absence of contaminants and laboratory control tests.<\/p>\n

Different porosities<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Stoneware is porous<\/strong>, thus absorbing easily some elements to which it is exposed. Earthenware is, also, porous but goes through an enamelling<\/strong> in order to decrease absorption. The same does not happen with porcelain<\/strong><\/a> which, because it has no porosity, is practically waterproof<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sound produced by materials<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Another way to differentiate materials is through touch<\/strong>. If we tap lightly with the tip of the finger on the porcelain, we notice that it emits a louder sound<\/strong> than earthenware and stoneware.<\/p>\n
